What is a bifacial solar panel?

A bifacial solar panel captures sunlight on both its front and rear surfaces, generating additional energy from reflected light bouncing off ground or nearby surfaces (albedo effect).

A bifacial panel differs from standard monofacial modules because its rear surface is transparent or semi-transparent, allowing light reflected from the ground or nearby surfaces to reach the back-side photovoltaic cells. Both surfaces contain active solar cells that convert light into electricity.

The additional energy yield from the rear surface depends on ground albedo, or reflectivity. In Perth, surfaces like light-colored render, gravel, sand, or concrete reflect more sunlight toward the rear of the panel. White-painted roofs, polished concrete, or specially laid reflective ground materials can significantly boost performance.
