What is half-cut cell technology?
Half-cut cell technology involves bisecting individual solar cells within a panel to lower resistive losses and improve performance under partial shading and low-light conditions.
Half-cut solar cells are individual cells cut lengthwise into two pieces before being assembled into a panel. This division reduces the distance electrical current must travel through each cell segment, lowering resistive losses that occur naturally as electricity moves through the silicon. Lower resistance translates directly to less wasted energy as heat and improved power output.
The main performance gains appear in two areas. First, under full sunlight on an unshaded panel, half-cut cells recover some of the energy lost to resistance in conventional full-cell designs. Second, when partial shade falls on the panel, the smaller segments respond more independently to changes in light. This means a shaded portion has less impact on the electrical current flowing through the entire string, so the unshaded sections continue producing power more effectively than they would in a full-cell panel under the same conditions.
