What is maximum power point tracking (MPPT)?
Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is an algorithm used by solar inverters to continuously adjust the voltage and current at which a panel string operates in order to extract the maximum available power output at any given moment.
Solar panels generate power across a range of voltage and current combinations, but only one specific operating point delivers maximum power at any given time. MPPT is the algorithm that finds and maintains this optimal point.
As sunlight intensity, angle, temperature, and shading change throughout the day, a panel's electrical characteristics shift constantly. Without MPPT, an inverter might operate panels at a suboptimal voltage or current, wasting available energy. The MPPT algorithm continuously samples the panel string's voltage and power output, adjusts the DC voltage to test different operating points, and locks in whichever combination produces the highest wattage.
