What is a PERC cell?

A PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) is a silicon solar cell with a reflective rear surface layer that redirects unused light into the active cell material, improving overall energy conversion efficiency.

PERC technology adds a passivated rear surface to standard monocrystalline or polycrystalline silicon cells. Rather than letting light pass straight through the back of the cell and escape, the rear layer reflects photons back into the silicon, giving them a second chance to generate electrical current. This reflective backing also reduces electron recombination losses at the rear surface, which wastes energy in conventional cells.

The rear-layer coating typically consists of a dielectric material such as silicon oxide or aluminum oxide, sometimes topped with a metal reflector. This combination blocks certain wavelengths of light while reflecting others, optimizing the cell's response across the solar spectrum. PERC cells deliver efficiency gains of 0.5-1.5 percent over conventional cells, which translates to more power from the same roof space. They work well in both full sun and partial shade conditions.
