What is usable vs nameplate capacity?

Nameplate capacity is the total energy a battery can hold when fully charged; usable capacity is the actual energy available for daily use after accounting for depth of discharge (DoD) limits that protect battery lifespan.

Battery specifications list nameplate capacity as the total rated storage in kilowatt-hours (kWh). This is the maximum charge the cell can theoretically hold. However, manufacturers and battery management systems restrict how much of that stored energy you can actually draw out and use each day.

Usable capacity accounts for depth of discharge limits, which reserve a portion of the battery to extend its cycle life and prevent degradation. Most lithium systems in residential solar installations operate at 80-90% DoD, meaning you can access 80-90% of nameplate capacity regularly. Some systems use lower DoD settings, reducing usable capacity further to preserve longevity.

The gap between the two figures affects your real-world performance. A 10 kWh battery with an 80% DoD limit provides only 8 kWh of usable energy per cycle. When comparing battery storage options for a Perth home or business, contractors and installers account for this difference when sizing a system to meet your daily load. Overlooking the distinction leads to undersizing and unmet energy expectations during peak demand or backup scenarios.
