Adding a battery to an existing solar system
Adding a battery to a system that's already installed and generating is a different scope of work from a new combined solar-plus-battery install. The installer has to work with the existing inverter (checking whether it's battery-ready, needs a hybrid retrofit, or requires an AC-coupled battery system added alongside it), assess the existing switchboard and metering setup, and confirm the panel array's output and orientation still make sense for the battery size being added.
Retrofits commonly involve one of two approaches: an AC-coupled battery (a separate battery inverter connects to the existing system on the AC side, minimal disruption to the current setup) or replacing the existing inverter with a hybrid unit that manages both panels and battery. Which path makes sense depends on the age and brand of the current inverter, its remaining warranty, and what battery brand is being fitted.

What it costs
Retrofit pricing depends on whether the existing inverter can stay (cheaper, AC-coupled option) or needs replacing with a hybrid unit, plus the battery capacity chosen and any switchboard work needed to accommodate it.

FAQ
- Do I need to replace my solar inverter to add a battery?
- Not always. If your inverter isn't hybrid-ready, an AC-coupled battery with its own inverter can usually be added without replacing the existing one.
- Will adding a battery affect my existing solar system's warranty?
- It shouldn't affect the panel warranty, but it's worth confirming with the installer, especially if any existing wiring or the inverter itself is altered.
- How old can my existing solar system be and still have a battery added?
- Most systems can have a battery retrofitted regardless of age, provided the panels and inverter are in good working order; an installer will assess this on inspection.
